Areli withdraw planning application for the redevelopment of The Walnuts Shopping Centre

Following several months of consultation and engagement with the local community, key stakeholders and Bromley Council, Areli has withdrawn the planning application for the redevelopment of The Walnuts Shopping Centre in Orpington.

The proposals included retail space targeted at local and independents retailers, new pedestrian routes and public spaces connecting the town centre, 990 homes targeting first and last time buyers, a state-of-the-art Leisure Centre and a new Day Care Centre bringing £500 million of inward investment into Orpington and around 535 permanent jobs.

A spokesperson for Areli said, “While we are encouraged that there is strong support for the principle of regenerating The Walnuts Shopping Centre, we have listened closely to the issues raised by the local community and consequently, have decided to withdraw our proposal.

We remain fully committed to creating a vibrant and distinctive town centre focused on local and independent retailers, supported by new homes. Over the past two years, we have engaged extensively with local organisations, tenants, schools, businesses and residents as well as with Bromley Council. We look forward to consulting on future regeneration plans in the coming months.”
